UVI Retirees Returning to Work Can Retain Annuity Benefits

Retired government employees who return to work at the University of the Virgin Islands will now continue drawing their full pension alongside their salary, after Gov. Albert Bryan Jr. signed a measure passed by the 36th Legislature during its Oct. 30 session. V.I. Bureau of Internal Revenue Launches Digital Tax Filing Platform

The V.I. Bureau of Internal Revenue has rolled out new online platforms designed to streamline how St. Thomas residents and local businesses file taxes and make payments to the territorial government.

The modernized systems allow taxpayers to submit income tax returns, gross receipts documentation and excise tax payments through dedicated digital portals, potentially reducing processing times and paperwork. For a territory where many residents and small business owners juggle complex tax obligations across multiple jurisdictions, the shift to online filing represents a significant shift in how the government manages its tax collection process.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue, housed at 6115 Estate Smith Bay in St. Thomas, operates during standard business hours—Monday through Friday, eight a.m. to five p.m. Residents can reach the office at (340) 715-1040 for St. Thomas or (340) 773-1040 for St. Croix. The agency also maintains a satellite office in Christiansted at 4008 Estate Diamond Plot 7-B.

Access to the online portals comes as the territorial government continues efforts to modernize financial operations. The Department of Finance oversees broader fiscal management for the V.I. government, administering regulations for both federally funded and locally funded operations.

Tax compliance and revenue collection remain critical for the territory’s budget. The V.I. government relies on revenue from individual income taxes, business gross receipts taxes and excise taxes to fund essential services including public education, infrastructure and healthcare. Streamlining the filing process can reduce administrative bottlenecks and encourage timely payment compliance among the business community.

For residents unfamiliar with the new online systems, the Bureau of Internal Revenue provides a general email contact at [email protected], though the agency notes this address should not be used to submit actual tax returns. The office has also published tax booklets and guidance materials on its website.

The Bureau encourages residents and businesses to explore the online platforms at their own pace. Those who prefer in-person assistance can visit either the St. Thomas or St. Croix office during regular business hours. As digital filing becomes the norm across local government agencies, residents will need to adapt to accessing services online while maintaining access to traditional channels for those who require personal assistance.
